In the southeastern part of Makarska, there is a sport- recreational center very know even abroad. Due to the mild climate it can be used during the whole year, by both locals and foreign sport national teams to prepare for important events and competitions. Tennis center in Makarska has 9 outside (open) tennis fields and 2 indoor fields. The lovers of extreme sports can try paragliding, rock-climbing, hiking, mountain cycling and so on.
Makarska has very well developed health tourism, especially in the spa treatment centers Biokovka and Marea, where a group of specialists offers different therapeutic services.
To relax you can take a pleasant walk along the harbor and city beaches. Those who look for harder exercises can take a hike along one of the many mountain paths. It is worth mentioning that every week; there is an organized mountain climbing to the top of Biokovo, starting from Makarska. In the very center of Biokovo, the hikers can encounter many historical spots/settlements and witness a harsh mountain life. For example, above Baška Voda, at the distance of 45 minutes of walk, there is a foothill village Bast, which is located at the altitude of 400 meters.
This place is ideal for tourists who want to know more about the culture of poor and humble inhabitants who despite higher possibilities of migrating into the coast, still didn’t leave their homes. Their life is a true example of agricultural, mountain life, and their homes are the example of the oldest settlements under the mountain Biokovo. In this area, a monuments of the old Bosnian religious tombstones can be found. Even today, Bast is a starting point for a tough climbing that continues through the Vela vrata, towards Šćirovac and Saint Ilija, but also on the right towards Kuranik and Šibenik.
Besides hiking, Biokovo offers a possibility for other recreational activities as well, such as speleology and caving, alpinism, mountain cycling, paragliding, orientation running, jogging, and one day maybe even skiing.
The bottom of the mountain offers a range of sports that will satisfy everyone’s taste. From the simple walks through the beautiful paths, to the cycling, jogging, beach volleyball, but also diving, sailing, parachuting, and many other water sports.
